Scholarships are given to students who excel in certain areas of school and usually a foundation, school and sometimes even a company give financial aid to the students selected for the scholarship. Scholarships come in many types and the criteria for each is different.

A merit scholarship is one given to a student for exceptional skills in either the field of education or sports. A school will give this scholarship to the student with terms. For example, if a student is given a scholarship for his excellent football skills, he would be expected to play for the school that is giving him the scholarship.

A poverty scholarship is given based on poverty and the ability to thrive in school. If a student shows promise with his grades but cannot afford college, a school may grant him a scholarship which would pay for all of his schooling needs and tuition.

A career scholarship is given to a student who decides on a career that is highly needed. A career that is not normally chosen. So if an area is in high need of doctors, medical scholarships would be given. In some cases the student may even be expected to provide services in a specific place for the school that gave the scholarship.

If you think you fit into any of the above categories for a scholarship, talk to your school and see if they can help you apply for one. A scholarship is a great way to get through college without having to go into debt to pay for it.
