Scholarships are given to students who excel in certain areas of school and usually a foundation, school and sometimes even a company give financial aid to the students selected for the scholarship. Scholarships come in many types and the criteria for each is different.

A merit scholarship is one given to a student for exceptional skills in either the field of education or sports. A school will give this scholarship to the student with terms. For example, if a student is given a scholarship for his excellent football skills, he would be expected to play for the school that is giving him the scholarship.

A poverty scholarship is given based on poverty and the ability to thrive in school. If a student shows promise with his grades but cannot afford college, a school may grant him a scholarship which would pay for all of his schooling needs and tuition.

A career scholarship is given to a student who decides on a career that is highly needed. A career that is not normally chosen. So if an area is in high need of doctors, medical scholarships would be given. In some cases the student may even be expected to provide services in a specific place for the school that gave the scholarship.

If you think you fit into any of the above categories for a scholarship, talk to your school and see if they can help you apply for one. A scholarship is a great way to get through college without having to go into debt to pay for it.

When a child is young he or she dreams of being a fireman, astronaut or a ballerina; then becomes an accountant. So once you get to a point in your life that you realize you need to make money to support yourself, you need to start thinking about what career you would do well in. Look at your likings, your natural strengths and what educational subjects you excel in.

A common career choice is a banking career. You can aim for being a bank teller or you could become a loan officer. Either of these jobs require a high school diploma, something you can get through an online course.

Another career choice is a teacher. You can be a general elementary school teacher or you could be a professor with a specialty, like history. An elementary school teacher will have knowledge and teach in general fields like math, social studies, science, business and the likes. A professor of history will have knowledge of all those subjects plus an in-depth knowledge and degree in history.

The above careers are just ideas to get you thinking about what you would do well in. Do some thorough research into the career you choose. What courses are needed, how long it will take to complete them and what university offers the best education in these courses are things to look at. Once you commit to a career, you will most likely be spending several years working toward the degrees you need. So, don’t take this decision lightly.
